2021 Earth-Tours COVID-19 Safety Plan Protocols

Disposable masks, hand sanitizer and disposable gloves will be available to our guests on all trips.

PHASE 1 – Separate vehicles and socially distanced hikes

Being in the GREAT outdoors should allow us to breathe easy (wearing masks where appropriate).  To maintain social distancing, we will caravan to appropriate trailheads with my guests driving in their own cars.  Many trailheads are located along paved roads suitable for any vehicle, but others require high-clearance or 4WD vehicles.

For guests who are less active and prefer driving tours, we will caravan between stops on the Burr Trail, Highway 12 or other well-maintained roads suitable for low-clearance vehicles.  I have walkie-talkies to keep in touch while we drive.  We will make a number of stops at wonderful places, where we might do short socially distanced hikes.

We will be able to visit slot canyons that are not too narrow or challenging and will do hikes where guests won’t need a helping hand from their Earth-Tours guide.

  • We will assess the group for comfort level in resuming shared space routines.
  • Guides will maintain 6’ social distancing on hikes.
  • Guides will wear masks and gloves when nearer to guests (providing physical assistance.)

PHASE 2 – Short time together in Earth-Tours SUV and socially distanced hikes

We will caravan to appropriate parking areas close to our destination. This approach will be used to reach trailheads requiring 4WD as well shuttling vehicles between two trailheads (eg. Escalante Rim to Canyon hike and Lower Muley Twist hike).

  • We will assess the group for comfort level in resuming shared space routines.
  • Everyone will wear masks in the vehicle.
  • Windows will be open for the duration of the ride with ac/heater on to maximize air movement through SUV.
  • Guides will maintain 6’ social distancing on hikes
  • Guides will wear masks and gloves when nearer to guests (providing physical assistance.)
  • Vehicle will be sanitized thoroughly before each trip.

PHASE 3 – Longer times together in Earth-Tours

Scenic 4WD tours and driving in Earth-Tours SUV from guests’ hotels (or appropriate rendezvous places) to trailheads.  If all members of the group and their guide have had their vaccinations, we hope that CDC advises us that we are safe to travel together.

PHASE 4 – Situation Normal

We CAN’T WAIT to just be together without contagion concerns!  We again will be able to go into the narrowest and most challenging slot canyons and do hikes to places where guides can lend a helping hand to our guests without using masks or gloves.

  • We will assess the group for comfort level in resuming shared space routines.
  • Vehicle will be sanitized thoroughly before each trip.

Our progression through the Covid Safety Plan Protocols will depend upon how effective the CV vaccination program proves to be, rates of contagion, where/when guests might have been exposed to CV, whether everyone has been vaccinated, and everyone’s comfort level.
