Beautiful Views and Arches "The late afternoon sky, black above Waterpocket Fold, had swollen with angry clouds. No time to be in a narrow canyon, I decided… I was caught by the storm and chased under an overhanging rock as the sky beat against the land. Clattering hail whitened the ground, only to be swept away by sheetwash rains running inches thick over the canyon walls. Lightning struck with a bone-jarring clash only fifty feet away. Halls Creek, paved with parched clay moment ago ran a torrent of red, one hundred feet from bank to bank." - Dr. Michael Collier, 1987  Our drive along the Burr Trail to the trailhead is a wonderful
introduction to both the Escalante Canyons and Capitol Reef with
incredible vistas in all directions. Spectacular in the morning light, the
orange Wingate Sandstone arcs around the Circle Cliffs to merge with
Waterpocket Fold to the east. Our hike will take us along and across
Waterpocket Fold, following a narrow canyon that meanders back and forth
through tilted strata that display a myriad of colors and landforms.
Climbing over a saddle across the wall of Navajo Sandstone, a rainbow of
brightly colored hogback ridges stretch along the base of the
"reef". Views of the Henry Mountains towering above a moonscape
of badlands are awesome. Winding our way across a slickrock wonderland,
slot canyons also await discovery by the adventurous.Distance: about 5 miles or more, we will do a shuttle, leaving your car at the trailhead. Difficulty: moderately difficult.  |
