Road Trip - Burr Trail, Capitol Reef, and Boulder Mountain "This is Coyote's country - a landscape of the imagination, where nothing is as it appears. The buttes, mesas, and redrock spires beckon you to see them as something other: a cathedral, a tabletop, bears' ears, or nuns. Windows and arches ask you to recall what is no longer there, to taste the wind for the sandstone it carries." - Terry Tempest Williams, Coyotes Canyon, 1989 The Burr Trail cuts across some of the most wild and spectacular country
in the world - the tributaries of the Escalante River and the renowned
Waterpocket Fold. Tilted rocks layers stepping onto this huge upwarp
display a rainbow of colors and textures beyond description. The Notum
Road parallels the fold, providing access to the slickrock wonderlands of
Capitol Reef, including several perennial streams that nourish nearby
ranchlands. Circling around on Highway 24, we follow the Fremont River, a
ribbon of green that contrasts with its redrock desert gorge. Climbing
Boulder Mountain, Highway 12 rises to over 9000' with scenic views over
Waterpocket Fold, the Henry Mountains, and most of the Colorado Plateau on
a clear day.Distance: about 125 miles drive round trip Difficulty: easy, with short hikes - easy to difficult, whatever you like. |
