Waterpockets
and Slickrock Hike "...the great plateau and its canyon wilderness is a treasure best enjoyed through the body and spirit...as a place for all who wish to rediscover the nearly lost pleasures of adventure." - Ed Abbey, The Journey Home The Navajo Sandstone is southern Utah's premier slickrock sandstone. Its
ancient sand dunes turned to stone create rolling landscapes with domes
and castles that are wonderful to explore. Hidden gardens are microcosms
that capture the imagination. Waterpocket pools of crystal water invite
you to reflect on their beauty or refresh yourself on a hot day. Views in
all directions provide a gorgeous backdrop - Boulder Mountain, the Henry
Mountains, and Navajo Mountain mark three compass points amidst the
awesome Escalante drainage that surrounds you. Slickrock is the absolute
best substrate for hiking and your experience will certainly delight your
inner child. This place is truly magical with hidden alcoves, huge domes
with fin-like ramparts, and narrows etched into solid rock. To top it off,
the Navajo changes color here from blonde to red to make an even more
beautiful landscape. Keith thinks this might be his favorite place on
Earth - but then he loves slickrock!Distance: about 5-10 miles round trips depending upon how much exploring you want to do. Difficulty: moderate to difficult, you choose difficulty and distance. |
